Green Initiatives of AECS Magnolia Maaruti Public School

A fully functional Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) enables the treatment and reuse of wastewater for gardening and other non-potable purposes, while sludge is repurposed into compost, supporting a circular resource system. The Reverse Osmosis (RO) system is complemented by a reuse mechanism where reject water is collected and utilized for cleaning and flushing, significantly reducing wastage.
Further strengthening these efforts, the campus is equipped with rainwater collection and harvesting systems, including rooftop collection, underground storage sumps, percolation tanks, and injection wells, ensuring groundwater recharge and reduced dependence on external water sources.
Complementing these infrastructural measures is the school’s commitment to maintaining a green and vibrant campus. Despite its urban location, the campus hosts a rich green cover with numerous trees and plants, and continuous plantation drives aim to further enhance biodiversity and ecological balance.
The school actively promotes awareness and capacity building through expert-led sessions and student engagement activities. A notable example is the talk on “Depleting Quantity and Quality of Water” by renowned geologist and river rejuvenator Dr. Lingaraju Yale, which provided valuable insights into real-world environmental challenges.

Students undertake innovative projects such as the Artificial Floating Island (AFI), exploring the role of aquatic plants like Vetiver and Colocasia in improving water quality and supporting aquatic ecosystems. Participation in national initiatives like INSPIRE-MANAK has further encouraged innovation, with student projects on automated irrigation systems promoting efficient water usage in agriculture.
The school also emphasizes field-based learning through outdoor projects. Students have conducted detailed studies on water quality across lakes such as Madiwala, Hulimavu, Begur, and Arekere, analyzing parameters like pH, dissolved oxygen, and electrical conductivity. Advanced projects comparing biodiversity, soil quality, and carbon sequestration have helped students understand ecological balance and the critical role of water bodies in climate regulation.
Extending learning beyond the classroom, AECS MMPS actively engages in outdoor and community-driven initiatives. Students have participated in plantation drives in collaboration with environmental organizations, contributing to lake rejuvenation efforts by planting water-retaining species such as Arjuna, Peepal, and Bamboo. The school’s Environment & Sustainability Awareness Runathon, conducted in successive years, has emerged as a flagship event, uniting students, staff, and the community under themes such as water conservation and the 5Rs—Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose, and Recycle.
In addition, a variety of competitions and awareness activities—including essay writing, poster presentations, model-making, surveys, and international collaborative projects—encourage students to explore practical solutions to environmental challenges. These initiatives not only build awareness but also foster critical thinking, creativity, and global collaboration.
